ViewSonic VX2235wmUNlike other big LCDs, the 22-inch wide-screen ViewSonic VX2235wm doesn't provide TV connectivity. Offering only VGA and DVI inputs, it serves simply as a monitor. But the VX2235wm's reasonable $399 price makes it a compelling entry in the budget-LCD category. The design of the VX2235wm is attractive, distinguished by its glossy black finish, and the rear ports are easily accessible. Beyond that, though, problems set in. The pair of built-in 2.5-watt speakers will suffice for an occasional Web clip or game, but we found dialogue from movies difficult to make out. Also. panel-adjustment options are lacking: The screen can tilt forward and back, but it can't swivel or pivot, and the height isn't adjustable. The buttons on the display are small and difficult to press. Moreover, don't expect mind-blowing performance. The VX2235wm, with a native resolution of 1,680x1,050, scored a low 69 on our DisplayMate tests. Colors in movies and games look washed-out, and we noted significant visible flicker noise and ghosting during DVD playback (although we didn't see ghosting in games). Still, the monitor excelled at tests that expose color banding. Text readability was good, with text crisp at a 6.8 font size. Professionals, imaging enthusiasts, and videophiles should look elsewhere, but those who simply want extra screen real estate could overlook the shortcomings and save some money.
